Are you heading to Turkey for your next holiday? Fantastic choice! The stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture will leave you bedazzled. But before you start packing your bags, it’s important to read some key local regulations to ensure your trip goes smoothly. From alcohol consumption to smoking restrictions, Turkey’s rules differ quite a bit for the Brits from what you might be used to in the UK.  So, let’s dive into the must-know guidelines to keep your holiday hassle-free.

Alcohol Awareness: Brits, Sip Safely When In Turkey

While Turkey doesn’t enforce a blanket ban on drinking in public, the rules around alcohol are more stringent than in the UK. Specifically, if you’re caught ‘disrupting the peace’ while under the influence, you might find yourself hit with a 617 lira fine that would be roughly £15. So, that late-night beach beer might not be the best idea. Istanbul officials have recently reminded both locals and tourists about these regulations after a few too many rowdy incidents disrupted the peace. The message is clear: enjoy your drink, but keep it civil.

And if you’re planning on grabbing a bottle for the road, be aware that off-licences stop selling alcohol at 10 PM sharp. However, you’ll still be able to enjoy a nightcap at bars and restaurants, which serve alcohol late into the night.

Turkey is also quite strict when it comes to smoking in public spaces. You won’t be able to light up on public transport, inside workplaces, or even in some outdoor event areas. Make sure to look for designated smoking spots to avoid any fines.

Another crucial point: always carry a photographic ID. Turkish law requires everyone, including tourists to have ID on them. The British Foreign Office strongly advises keeping your passport handy, as authorities frequently conduct checks, especially in busy areas.

When visiting mosques or religious sites, modesty is key. Dress appropriately to avoid offending. Make sure to always ask permission before snapping photos of people or sensitive locations like military or official installations.
