Walmart Recalls 850,000 Water Bottles

According to The Indian Express, two people lost their vision permanently after the lid of an ‘Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottle’ ejected and hit them in the face. Following this, Walmart recalled about 850,000 bottles in the US, based on a July 10 notice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The commission also posted the update on their official X account.

The CPSC noted that these bottles, sold in Walmart stores across the US since 2017, pose “serious impact and laceration hazards.” The risk increases if the bottle contains carbonated drinks or perishable beverages like juice or milk, and is stored for too long. In such cases, the pressure can make the lid eject forcefully and increase the risk of accidents for the consumers.

2 Consumers Face Permanent Vision Loss

Some people have already suffered injuries. Walmart has received 3 such reports. In 2 of them, the lid hit the user’s eye and caused permanent vision loss. As per The New Indian Express, Walmart said it prioritises customer safety. The company also confirmed it is working closely with the CPSC and the bottle manufacturer to resolve the issue. All these water bottles are now being removed from stores across the US.

Walmart further clarified that the model number of these bottles is 83-662, which appears only on the packaging, not on the bottle. It has a silver stainless steel base and a black lid. Times Now also reported that the bottles were priced around $15 (₹1,287 approx.) and were made in China.
