Wamiqa Gabbi and Rajkummar Rao met our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, for a delicious Sunday Brunch at Bawri in Mumbai. Success comes with hard work, and both of them had their own unique journeys to achieve it. Wamiqa and Rajkummar shared what their initial days in Mumbai were like and how they eventually found success with immense support from their parents. Here’s how it went down.
Wamiqa Gabbi And Rajkummar Rao Reflect On Their Early Days In Mumbai
Mumbai is the city of dreams, and to live theirs, Wamiqa and Rajkummar came to this bustling metropolis. But were the early days in Mumbai easy for them? No, they both struggled very hard. Wamiqa shared that when she was in Bombay, she once asked her father for ₹15,000 for shopping, and he gave it to her. Years later, she found out that he had actually borrowed that money for her. Wamiqa added, “My father could have denied me, saying yeh itna zaruri thodi na hai, but he didn’t. That gave me the security that I can always count on my father to survive in Bombay.”
For Rajkummar, his early days in the city were also filled with struggles and compromises. He lived in a rented house with two friends and managed his expenses carefully to cover rent and other necessities. “Jab bhi paise khatam ho jaate the, I would call my mom and ask for it, and I knew wo kahin se bhi arrange karke de degi because she was not a working mom,” he said. Even on the days when things didn’t work out in Mumbai, their parents never asked them to come back. They knew their children had come to the city with immense passion and believed they would eventually achieve something great.
Both Shared The Same Story Of A ‘Gadda’ In Mumbai
During their candid conversation, Wamiqa Gabbi and Rajkummar Rao fondly reminisced about their early days in Mumbai. Wamiqa shared, ”I belong to a middle-class family, and when I moved to Bombay, I was staying at this 1 BHK apartment near Yaari road, and my father bought me a TV, ek ‘gadda’ (mattress) and gas, and he provided me with everything.’’ Rajkummar Rao instantly high-fived Wamiqa Gabbi and said, ”Main bhi..First 6 saal mai gadde pe hi sora tha.’’ Rajkummar had this small table beside his ‘gadda’, to which Wamiqa replied, ‘’Nahi, mere paas table nahi thaa, lekin maine apni pehli kamai se pehla bed kharida tha.’’ Both of them really cherish those days in Bombay, and for them, sleeping on that gadda had a different feeling.

Neither Of Them Wanted To Work In Serials
Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi aimed to get their first film in Bollywood and never wanted to work in television serials. Even when they received offers for roles in serials, their parents never forced them to take the opportunity. Both of their families supported and believed in the dreams they were pursuing. When Wamiqa got a call for a lead role in one of Sony’s serials, her first response was, “Main tein ni karna,” she said in her Punjabi accent. Even though she could have earned approximately ₹4 lakhs a month, her father didn’t pressure her and instead encouraged her to follow her dreams. Both Rajkummar and Wamiqa credit their parents for being true angels who supported them through thick and thin during their early days in Mumbai.
They also shared another interesting story about how they finally made their families proud after years of struggle. To hear the full story, catch the episode of Sunday Brunch on the Curly Tales YouTube channel.
