Mumbai is a highly crowded city, particularly when it comes to travelling by train. Sometimes, the station’s dangerous situation can arise due to the large number of people present, potentially leading to injuries. The Western Railway has imposed a penalty for passengers exceeding their travel class luggage limit and urged against overcrowding stations following a recent stampede incident at Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus. Until November 8, the Western Railway has temporarily restricted the selling of platform tickets at a few important stations.
Western Railways’ Guidelines Regarding Luggage & Commute
The Western Railways has stated that passengers can carry certain amounts of luggage without charge, but items like scooters, bicycles, and consignments exceeding 100 cm x 100 cm x 70 cm do not qualify for the free allowance. Western Railway is urging passengers to avoid overcrowding at stations, enter premises only as needed, follow train schedules, and adhere to luggage limits.
A directive has been issued to increase the free allowance for luggage for different travel classes, with penalties for exceeding the marginal allowance mentioned in the news release, as reported by the Deccan Herald. The directive will be in effect immediately and remain in effect until November 8. The directive also aims to address the issue of stacked parcels on train platforms, which can cause inconvenience for passenger movement. Further, due to passenger safety, instructions have been issued to prevent the stacking of parcel consignments on platforms for extended periods before a train’s scheduled departure.
About Bandra Terminus Stampede Incident
As passengers hurried to board a Mumbai-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express train to Gorakhpur on Sunday, a stampede broke out at the Bandra Terminus railway station, injuring ten people. At 2.55 am, the train was trying to reach Platform No. 1 when the tragedy happened. As passengers fought for a seat, several fell.
The fact that there was a rush even though two trains had already left on the same route emphasises the necessity of raising passenger awareness of the availability of multiple trains in order to prevent crowding.
