The Living Fort of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer Fort, receives a huge footfall all year round. The yellow-stoned monument enchants tourists from all over the world with its grandeur and beauty. It seamlessly blends with its golden surroundings and appears like a glowing golden monument against the setting sun!
It is mostly in the news for its touristy things but, recently, a wall collapsed on the Shiv Road side of the fort. This raised concerns about its structural integrity. The reason behind this was Jaisalmer receiving excessive rainfall and flooding, this year.
The lime mortar used has deteriorated as this fort was built 868 years ago. Hence, the 30-foot walls have weakened over time along with inadequate maintenance. This further aided in Jaisalmer Fort’s walls being susceptible to damage due to extreme rainfall. Altogether, a wall crumbled down with no reports of casualties.
Who Is Taking Action For This?
Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan, built in 1156 AD by the Rawal (ruler) Jaisal from whom it derives its name, and stood at the crossroads of important trade routes (including the ancient Silk road).#Jaisalmer #स्वर्ण_नगरी pic.twitter.com/72AA8ZkdPf

The maintenance of this majestic fort is under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Previously, other such damaging incidents have been brought to light and then, repaired by ASI. However, the fort hasn’t undergone any major renovations in recent years. Thus, ASI receives slight incidents of collapses here and there.
The age-old walls of Jaisalmer Fort have a considerable amount of civilisation residing here. It is mostly from old Jaisalmer city. This is one of the major reasons why ASI should promptly look into this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s structural integrity and preserve it. Top-level employees from ASI are expected to take necessary actions to repair the collapsed wall and pay attention to other portions of the fort.
