Some call it paneer, others call it cottage cheese. But what’s in a name when cricketer Virat Kohli is the one to introduce paneer to you? This is exactly what happened to the talented South African cricketer, AB de Villiers! He joined Mashable India’s Siddhaarth Aalambayan in Mumbai for an amazing Sunday Brunch episode. We were at The Sassy Spoon in Mumbai and bonded over Indian cuisine and its street when he revealed his thoughts on paneer, a cheese common in the Indian subcontinent crafted with full-fat buffalo or cow milk.
AB de Villiers’s Real Reaction After Eating Paneer
A scrumptious spread of loaded tacos, thin-crust pizza, salad, paneer fritters, and more were on the table for the brunch session. While chatting about cricket, de Villiers noticed the paneer fritters from the corner of his eyes. It wasn’t just a regular dish but noodles-wrapped paneer fritters! He couldn’t help but express his opinions on this food item.
“I enjoy paneer. Virat told me to eat paneer. When I met him, he wasn’t a vegetarian but he introduced me to it. He (really) loves his paneer!” On hearing this, Siddhaarth went ahead and thanked our Kohli for introducing AB to cottage cheese.
Further, the cricketer elaborated on the first time he ever saw paneer and remarked, “What in the world is this?” People told him that it is a type of cheese full of protein, fat, minerals, and vitamins. This healthy cheese is extremely great for the body, and he fell in love with paneer as soon as he consumed it!

Just Like Indians, He Ate With His Hands!
AB de Villiers’s attention was back on the paneer fritters in front of him. He politely asked our host whether he could use his hands, a common Indian culture. We were more than happy to say yes to the South African cricketer!
The soft paneer wrapped in noodles, fried till golden brown was a burst of flavours in his mouth. It was the perfect amount of crunchy yet soft dish. There was a certain amount of kick to it and de Villiers enjoyed it. He said, “I love a little bit of spice in my food.” As an Indian, same AB, same!
