To understand the unpredictable weather patterns and improve weather surveillance, India will soon launch Mission Mausam. The ₹2,000 crore project received a nod of approval from the Indian government recently. This programme aims to boost research and development and also broaden its horizon in atmospheric sciences, weather surveillance, modelling, forecasting, and management.

As per a Hindustan Times report, the India Meteorological Department, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting will come together to implement Mission Mausam. This project aims to provide people with accurate weather advisory and nowcast technology in the next 5 to 6 years.

The project will make use of advanced observation systems, high-performance computing and cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to help improve weather forecasting. In fact, with this mission, researchers will be able to create artificial clouds to improve conditions in drought-hit areas.

Amid the climate crisis, understanding and predicting weather patterns is becoming hard for agencies. As per the Ministry of Earth Sciences, tropical weather forecasting is challenging for India. This is, reportedly, due to the complexity of atmospheric processes and India’s current limitations in observation and model resolution. Mission Mausam will help improve this situation.

Authorities will deploy next-generation radars and satellite systems with advanced sensors and high-performance supercomputers, improved earth system models and a GIS-based automated Decision Support System for real-time data dissemination to make this project a success. This will, in turn, benefit India across all sectors including agriculture, defence, environment, aviation, tourism, energy, and health.
