The Delhi government is planning a new mobility initiative for women tourists, ‘e-bike Didi Yojana’. The scheme where women drivers will ferry women tourists on electric two-wheelers to promote women’s safety in Delhi. Read on to know more about the scheme.

Delhi To Launch eBike Didi Yojana

According to the Hindustan Times, the Delhi government is planning an ‘eBike Didi Yojana’, is a mobility initiative under which women drivers will carry women tourists on electric two-wheelers. As per the officials, the project is currently at the consultation stage. The project aims to provide a safe, environmentally friendly and affordable last-mile transport option for women visitors.

Under the proposed model, trained women riders will operate electric bikes or scooters to carry women passengers to tourist destinations and to the metro stations. An official told the Hindustan Times the initiative is a move to empower women and also strengthen women’s safety. The scheme is in the process of consulting other departments on this proposal.

The officials also revealed that the government has tied up with Bharat Taxi, a ride-hailing platform, to operate the scheme. The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has signed an MoU with Bharat Taxi, and the government might collaborate with them on this scheme to provide commuters with the option to book e-bikes. The scheme will only be accessible to women.

As per the Hindustan Times, women aged 18 to 40 are likely to be considered for enrolment in the scheme. The women should be residents of Delhi and have a valid driving licence. The eligibility criteria will be finalised after the scheme is approved.

This initiative is also expected to help reduce sustainable urban transport by deploying electric scooters. The government may begin with a pilot phase in key tourist circuits; depending on the outcome, the scheme may be expanded in phases.

The proposal will also promote structured training for women riders on road safety, vehicle maintenance, soft skills and awareness of tourist routes. Other safety measures, such as GPS tracking, will be incorporated to enhance passenger trust.

While no timeline has been finalised, officials stated that the government is keen to move forward with the scheme after the stakeholder consultations are complete.
