What Is Girl Dinner, The New Social Media Trend Sparking Concerns On Internet’s Eating Habits?

Girl Dinner

In the age of social media, trends come and go rapidly, shaping the way we interact, communicate, and even dine. Now, welcome to Tiktok’s latest trend,’ girl dinners’ where you can see women presenting their aesthetic charcuterie boards and beautiful snack plates. This was coined by a Tiktok user, Olivia Maher, who in May uploaded a video explaining how much she appreciates the simple pleasure of a dinner consisting only of small snacks.

What Is Girl Dinner?

The trend’s appeal is that Maher gave something that so many people can relate to a charming and catchy name, like many other things that become extremely popular online. You know those times when your significant other has to work late and you just sort of munch rather than prepare a meal?  Yes, now it’s called ‘Girl Dinner’.

According to a New York Times article, Maher said that that one might just be eating the frozen pizza slice, some grapes and perhaps a bottle of wine to go with it. But, one feels wonderful about it, like an indulgence, so it’s a ‘girl dinner’.

In recent weeks, Girl Dinners have been extremely popular on TikTok, with tens of thousands of women uploading their own versions. One woman used two opened packets of spaghetti to make two distinct dishes, drizzling each with cheese shreds and oil. Girl Dinner can include popcorn, pickles and strawberries, frozen rice and sauce, or any other dish you choose.

The only thing that all of these Girl Dinners have in common is that they are celebrations of giving in to perhaps the laziest means to satisfy one’s craving needs. This is not just for dinner; it can also be eaten as a snack at any time of the day.

Influencers and celebrities have significantly contributed to the popularity of the ‘Girl Dinner’ trend. However, some people have expressed doubts over the healthfulness of the modest amount of food.  It’s true that Girl Dinners with just a few snacks or a single dessert wouldn’t be a healthy choice if consumed every day.

The New York Post referred to it as “Gen Z’s disturbing new ‘girl dinner’ trend,” noting that certain female Dinners, such as a can of Coke or a few pickles, appear to be disordered eating in a snazzy new disguise. Of course, maintaining a balanced diet should be one’s main priority. You might want to talk to your doctor about adopting healthier eating habits if you consistently have a Coke and a pickle for dinner.

Maher emphasised that Girl Dinner isn’t at all about the ingredients in an interview with the Today show. Anything that makes you joyful is acceptable for a ‘girl dinner.’

So, what do you think about this ‘girl dinner’ trend?
