The now-trending 12 grapes trend actually dates back to the 19th century and originated in Spain. People believe that eating 12 grapes on New Year’s Eve brings a year of good luck, prosperity, and love. As per the tradition, each grape represents a month of the year and people should eat one grape with each chime of the bell at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Our Editor-in-Chief Kamiya Jani, who was in Madrid to celebrate New Year, also tried this tradition. She mentioned that in Madrid as the clock strikes 12, people eat 12 grapes in 12 seconds for good luck. People were seen carrying grapes with them even when they were celebrating outside.

Grapes Sales Surge On New Year’s Eve In India

Now, the 12 grapes trend has been all over the internet in the last few days. And its effect showed as the sales of grapes surged across India. According to CNBC TV18, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart shared top trends of consumer orders for New Year’s Eve and one of the most surprising trends was grapes.

In fact, it was one of the highest-ordered items on Blinkit on December 31, 2024. As per the platform’s data, they delivered 7x more grapes on New Year’s Eve as compared to regular days. For Swiggy Instamart, the top trending searches on December 31 were milk, chips, chocolate, paneer, and grapes!
