Zomato Launches ‘Food Rescue’ To Minimise Food Wastage
Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the launch of a new feature on the app called ‘Food Rescue’. With this new feature, the food delivery platform hopes to tackle one of the biggest issues of the food and restaurant industry – food wastage.
According to Moneycontrol, with this new feature, customers residing near a cancelled order’s original delivery route will be able to claim the food order at a discounted price, if the order is in its untampered, original packaging.
In his tweet, Deepinder Goyal mentioned that despite Zomato’s “stringent policies and a no-refund policy for cancellations, more than 4 lakh perfectly good orders get cancelled for various reasons by customers.” He believes ‘Food Rescue’ will help avoid this massive wastage.
All You Need To Know About This New Feature
Now, how exactly will Zomato’s Food Rescue feature work? According to Deepinder Goyal’s tweet, details about a cancelled order will pop up for customers within a 3 km radius of the delivery partner carrying the order. To ensure freshness, this option will only be available for a few minutes.
He then went on to explain that Zomato will not keep any proceeds (except the required government taxes) from orders placed via Food Rescue. The amount will be shared with the original customer and with the restaurant partner. Furthermore, restaurant partners will continue to receive compensation for the original cancelled order, plus a portion of the amount paid by the new customer if the order is claimed.
The Food Rescue option will show up on Zomato’s home page automatically if there’s a cancelled order available for you to grab. You can refresh and check for any newly available orders which need to be rescued. Also, this feature is not applicable for orders containing items sensitive to distances or temperature. This includes food items like ice creams, shakes, smoothies, and certain perishable items.
