Ooty is a popular resort town in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. Known for its breezy cool weather and awe-inspiring landscape, this town is a popular getaway for people in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. While there are a lot of places to explore here, we suggest checking out Upper Bhavani Lake. This lake is a peaceful escape that’s hidden in the lush greenery of Nilgiris.

An Unexplored Gem Hidden A Few Kilometres From Ooty City

Upper Bhavani Lake is an artificial reservoir that is created by the Upper Bhavani Dam. About 60 kilometres from Ooty, the lake is in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Avalanche region of Tamil Nadu. With crystal-clear water and views that leave you awestruck, this place is an absolute delight for the senses. One can feel the calmness of the water, breathe in fresh air due to the extensive greenery, and simply enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds this place.

You have to walk through Cauliflower Shola forests to reach this place and the misty, foggy weather of the area just adds to the charm of this lake. You will have to take a bus safari that is facilitated by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department to reach here. And that safari is a delight in its own right! You can admire the raw beauty of the forest here and even spot majestic elephants here.

Since the lake is fairly lesser-known, you can expect a sparse crowd here. Which in turn adds to the calm, tranquil vibe of the place. You can have a picnic with your family and friends here and enjoy the serenity of the lake. Or take hikes nearby to click pictures and enjoy the beauty of nature. There is also a Bhavani Amman Temple nearby that is just a small hike from the lake.

How To Reach Here

Since the lake is inside the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, you can reach there via a bus safari provided by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The ride is about 45 minutes long and covers other spots in the reserve as well. These buses are available at the entrance check post and take you through a fall nearby, the Bhavani Amman Temple and Shola Forests to make your safari experience worthwhile. The whole experience can last up to two hours.
