Before we start talking about the eligibility, it’s important to note that smart gates are truly an easy way to travel. Eliminating the need for manual passports, stamping, or document checks, it uses biometric verification and facial recognition to identify travellers in a quick and secure manner. In fact, those passengers who are registered can just walk through the gate, look into the camera and when verified, they can pass through in just a few seconds. This makes arrival and departure at Dubai Airport a lot faster, highly efficient and contactless.
What About The Eligibility?
But who can use these smart gates? Well, according to the GDRFA, a person can use these smart gates, even if they belong to any of the aforementioned categories! These are as follows:
- UAE Citizens
- Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) citizens
- UAE Residents
- Visa-on-arrival guests with biometric passports
- Guests holding Schengen Union visas
- Pre-issued visa holders
Some Passengers Might Not Be Eligible
There are, however, some passengers who are not eligible to use these gates, even if they belong to the above categories! These individuals are as follows:
- People of Determination (Individuals with disabilities or impairments)
- Guests with large strollers
- Families with children
- Guests under 1.2 m in height
So, to be able to pass through the smart gates, not only should you be eligible, but you must also be registered. And you must also be able to meet the criteria listed above if you wish to use this state-of-the-art facility.

Registering For This Service
It’s important to note that you need to be registered in order to use the smart gate facility. For registration, you must follow these steps:
- Visit the GDRFA official government website and select the service. ‘Inquiry for Smart Gate Registration’ on the homepage.
- After this, click on the red, ‘Start Service’ button. In the next step, you will be choosing one of the options, as mentioned below:File number – In this, you will have to select the file type, in which the options are between ‘resident’ or ‘permit’; make sure to choose the applicable option. Then select the visa issuing emirate and enter the file number.
Or
UDB Number or the Emirates Unified Number
Or
Emirates ID Number
Or
Passport number. In this, you will also have to enter your ‘nationality’ and ‘passport number’. - After this, you must enter your birth date and select your gender. Once this is done, select ‘I am not a robot’ captcha and then click on the submit button.
Finally, you will be informed by GDRFA Dubai, as the website will show the message, ‘Record Is Registered. You can use Smart Gates.’
