Air India has grounded a trainer pilot for not conducting simulator training sessions correctly. This was followed by the removal of 10 pilots from flying duties who were trained by him. The problem was exposed by a whistleblower, which led to an internal probe and proved the lapses in training procedures.
Air India Trainer Pilot Fired Following Whistleblower’s Complaint
There was a complaint by a whistleblower that an Air India trainer pilot had not carried out recurrent simulator training correctly, and there were flight safety problems. Air India took the complaint very seriously and carried out a detailed investigation.
The investigation supported the complaint, and the trainer pilot was immediately terminated. In addition, 10 pilots trained by the released instructor have also been grounded on precautionary grounds. They will be kept off duty until investigations further verify that they are competent.

Air India Voluntarily Reports The Case To DGCA
As a matter of policy of voluntary disclosure, Air India informed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) about the problem. Also, the airline thanked the whistleblower for bringing the matter to light.
Since it was taken over by the Tata Group, Air India has embraced the ‘Tata Code of Conduct’ to establish strict ethical and operational standards. The quick response of the airline in this regard is a reflection of its commitment to maintaining the highest aviation safety and training standards.

This accident is a reminder that there has to be proper training in airline services. While Air India’s prompt action is a sign of its interest in safety, one cannot help but wonder at the general lack of watchfulness in pilot training programs.
