As per aviation experts, flight attendants assume a ‘brace position’ during flight takeoffs and landings. It is an important safety manoeuvre that flight attendants practice and is even mentioned in airline emergency procedures all over the world. In this position, they keep their feet flat on the floor and sit on their hands.

With their hands tucked under their thighs with palms facing upward, the flight attendants lower the likelihood of limbs flailing uncontrollably. So, in case there is any turbulence, the cabin crew is able to maintain balance and control in an emergency, and are able to avoid being thrown around the cabin.

This position, reportedly, minimises injury in the event of an emergency. It restricts movement and stabilises the flight attendants’ bodies. Sitting upright in a brace position provides a stable base for the body. It lowers the chance of sustaining injuries like dislocated shoulders, broken wrists, or head trauma that can occur by one’s own limbs strike the face or other parts of the body during flight turbulence.

Other Aspects Of ‘Brace Position’

Some flight attendants also prefer to keep their hands on their lap, instead of tucking them under their thighs. This hand position makes them look calmer and displays a sense of stability to passengers. Also, as a safety precaution, the cabin crew avoids crossing their legs as it can restrict movement. They generally prefer to keep their legs firm on the floor.

Now, the brace position for passengers is different from that recommended for the flight attendants. Passengers are advised to bend forward and place their heads against the seat in front of them with their hands either over their heads or ankles. This posture is designed to protect the neck, head, and upper body. However, flight attendants have to maintain situational awareness. They have to be physically ready to assist with emergency procedures, and their brace position keeps them mentally prepared for any emergency.
