Why Is Delhi Airport Terminal 2 Closing For 2 Months And How Will The Flights Be Managed?

Delhi Airport

Delhi Airport is in for a significant operational change as Terminal 2 (T2) is scheduled to be shut down for four to five months from April 2025. The shutdown is part of an extensive modernisation initiative to strengthen infrastructure and improve the passenger experience. In this timeframe, flight operations are to be redirected to Terminal 1 (T1), which has been revamped to handle extra traffic.

Delhi Airport’s Terminal 2 has been catering to domestic travellers for more than 40 years. The terminal will be closed temporarily due to the refurbishments to cope with the increasing need for air travel.

As T2 serves 15 million passengers every year, its operations will be shifted to T1, which has been in the process of transformation under Phase 3A development.

T1’s redevelopment at a cost of ₹12,500 crore includes an apron with parking stands, taxiway expansions, and enhanced terminal infrastructure. These enhancements will facilitate T1 to pick up the traffic load of T2 without any glitches.

As an addition to the changes, Delhi Airport’s one runway will be shut down for the fitting of a new Instrument Landing System (ILS). This improvement will increase flight operations in low visibility, thereby making the airport more capable of winter fog.

With T2 out of commission, travellers can look forward to a reallocation of domestic flights between the other terminals. The transition has been well-planned by the airport operator to ensure smooth sailing for travellers. Terminal 3 (T3), which mainly deals with international flights, will also experience a functional realignment.

T3’s local zone (Pier C) will be repurposed as an international terminal, increasing its capacity from 20 million to 32 million passengers per year. This is done to meet the growing number of international passengers at Delhi Airport.

While these developments come to fruition, frequent flyers will look forward to viewing how these shifts make Delhi Airport.
