Why Is North India Getting So Much Rainfall? IMD Explains

Several states in North India are experiencing a frightening side of the monsoon season this year. Many villages are completely inundated with terrible damage to so many places. With heavy rainfall, landslides, rockslides, and floods, most parts of North India are going through a difficult time. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared the reasons behind such intense rain spells.

IMD Shared Details About North India’s Harsh Monsoon Season

Recently, the weather department explained all the causes and reasons that led to such an unbelievable downpour and all its scary consequences. The interaction of the monsoon seasonal winds and western disturbance is a primary reason for such torrential rainfall in so many districts. M Mohapatra, the IMD director general, shared how this convergence is the reason for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand. Also, July will see more rainfall.

Several parts of India were going through a rainfall deficit just last month. But the entire scenario changed in such a small span of time. Monsoon season literally swept away North India since the first week of July itself and the intense spells have already bridged the gap of rainfall deficiency this year. But this is not the end! Weather predictions state that all these places will receive rainfall in the next few days as well:

  • Delhi
  • Haryana
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Punjab
  • Rajasthan
  • Uttarakhand

Updates On This Year’s Monsoon Season:

  • The cumulative rainfall in India was recorded as 148.6 mm at the end of June. In comparison to the average rate, this was actually 10 per cent lesser than usual.
  • The intense spells since the first week of July changed all these numbers. Now, the cumulative rainfall is 243.2 mm. In fact, it is already 2 per cent more than the normal level of 239.1 mm.
  • According to data shared by IMD, northwest India recorded 59 per cent more rainfall and central India saw a 4 per cent increase.
  • There is still a deficiency in some parts. East and northeast India reported 17 per cent deficiency. And peninsular India saw a 23 per cent deficiency.

IMD shared that the intensity of rainfall will decrease slowly. Stay very safe in these times.
