The country is adding a new tax in between the growth of tourist footfall. The plan is to take control and reduce the impact of the surge in travel destinations.

In a Television interview with Shery Ahn on Bloomberg, Iceland Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir shared how tourism witnessed exponential growth in the past decade. The increase in number of visitors creates a pressure. The uptick in tourism is impactful on the Nordic country’s unspoiled natural beauty and to take control of people’s impact on climate, the country decided to hike taxes for people living there. Though the Prime Minister did not share the exact amount of raise, she mentioned that it won’t be high.

Sustainable Steps To Be Taken

Many cities and countries started taking some crucial steps such as tourism tax to improve the country’s tourism industry and include sustainable efforts to take care of nature. Iceland’s PM shared how many companies in the tourism sector are working to find ways to turn over to a circular economy, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The steps are to decrease the consumption of fossil fuels by choosing sustainable substitutions. Such small and impactful contributions can turn out to be a great investment for the future and help restore the natural aura and charm of the destination.
