On March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day. The day focuses on gender equality and women’s rights movements all over the world. Ahead of Women’s Day this year, we can’t help but applaud IndiGo for incorporating the ethos of diversity, equity, and inclusion in its policy and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace.
Maintaining A Healthy Gender Balance At Workplace
IndiGo, an Indian low-cost airline, believes that a diverse and inclusive workplace is stronger and more innovative. For them, diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just a policy, but a core value and that is reflected in the fact that about half their workforce is women. With effective policy initiatives and active measures, they have a healthy gender workplace balance.
In fact, in June 2024, they were honoured with the ‘Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) Champion Award’ by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The popular air carrier has 44% of women in its workforce, out of which 17% are in revenue-generating roles and 25% are in STEM roles.
For female travellers, the airline introduced a special Seat Selection Feature. This new feature allows visibility of seats booked by female passengers, highlighted in pink, exclusively during web check-in on the website. It is tailored to Passenger Name Records (PNRs) with women, whether travelling solo or as part of family bookings. After extensive market research, the airline came up with this new feature and it is currently in its pilot phase.

Everyday Is Women’s Day At IndiGo
What stood out for us about IndiGo is the fact that the airline has around 14% women pilots. This is almost double when compared to the global average of 7-9% female pilots in the workforce. The airline inducted 77 female pilots into its Airbus and ATR fleet, to celebrate the 77th Independence Day on August 14, 2024. And they are not stopping there! They plan to cross the number of 1,000 women pilots by August 2025.
Captain Indira Sharma Mittra, a veteran in Indian aviation with over 30 years of experience, has been working with IndiGo for over a decade now. While talking about the airline’s policy for women employees, she said, “IndiGo doesn’t just celebrate Women’s Day; it lives it every single day. As the airline with the highest number of women pilots in the world, IndiGo continues to break barriers and redefine what’s possible for women in aviation. From the cockpit to leadership roles, IndiGo empowers women to dream beyond conventions, defy limits, and take flight toward a future where gender is never a barrier to ambition. Wings don’t discriminate and the Air has no prejudices- only courage and skill define a pilot!”

Women don’t need a day to celebrate them. What they need are equal and fair opportunities to show that they are no less than their counterparts. Kudos to IndiGo for doing just that!
