Empress Elisabeth of Austria, commonly known as Sisi, was a fascinating and enigmatic figure in 19th-century European history. Sisi’s life was marked by both privilege and tragedy, and she remains a captivating subject of historical interest to this day. In September, the Royal Palace of Gödöllő near Budapest will host a special exhibition called ‘Sisi on Tour,’ jointly organised by the Royal Palace of Gödöllő and the Schönbrunn Group.
The Royal Palace of Gödöllő Is Hosting ‘Sisi On Tour’
The exhibition will showcase the personal belongings of Empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi. This venture will give a fascinating insight into the life of this captivating 19th-century European figure. Her unconventional and non-traditional beauty made her a subject of fascination and admiration. The Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, which gave Hungary more freedom within the Habsburg Empire, was established in 1867.
She was a legendary participant in its creation. Sadly, when she was visiting Geneva in 1898, Empress Elisabeth was murdered. An Italian anarchist used a sharp file to stab her in the heart. The premature passing of Sisi brought an end to her 44-year reign as Austria’s Empress. Around 200 items from the extensive collection will be featured in the ‘Sisi on Tour’ exhibition.
On this tour, special attention will be paid to significant objects like the silk christening gown and bonnet for Elisabeth, the jar engraved with the Emperor’s imperial motto, and the historically significant Hungarian crown. Various personal items, such as photographs, writings, porcelain, textiles, and more, allow visitors to learn about her magnificent world.

The Exhibition Will Celebrate The Empress’ Legacy

The Sisi Museum in Vienna’s Queen Elisabeth expert, Michael Wohlfart, is the curator of this outstanding exhibition. It will also commemorate the 125th anniversary of Empress Elisabeth’s passing. The exhibition will be on view from September 8 to January 28. It promises a fascinating journey through the life and legacy of this extraordinary empress.
