As Canada imposed a cap on international students, many Canadian colleges and universities are now fearing steep budget cuts. According to The Indian Express report, many Canadian colleges and universities that used to admit a large number of international students from countries like India are now fearing cuts in wages, benefits, and jobs.

According to the report, international students pay nearly five times more tuition than domestic students. For example, international students at the University of British Columbia pay about $45,000 a year in tuition. This is almost five times more than a Canadian citizen pays. This shows how the budgets of many universities will be affected due to the capping of foreign students.

As per a report in Vancouver Sun, members of the faculty association have labelled this situation a “crisis.” They believe this “sudden and overwhelming drop” in enrollment will affect everyone. The Indian Express further mentioned that institutions like Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, and Vancouver Island University have acknowledged this crisis. They are also planning budget cuts due to declining international student enrollments.

Canada has decided to impose a temporary two-year limit on the number of new study permits issued. As per the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), only 364,000 study permits will be approved for 2024. With this, Canada aims to balance the number of incoming students with the capacity of Canadian institutions. They also believe that capping the student numbers will ensure that the educational experience remains exceptional for all.

As per a Financial Express report, Canada expects 606,000 study permit applications in 2024. Out of this, they will approve 364,000 applications. The IRCC has also revised the postgraduate work permit eligibility criteria and the GIC requirement for international students. They have also changed the eligibility criteria for postgraduate work permits.
