The Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi, launched the world’s largest grain storage programme today. While giving a speech at an event, he said that farmers have to go through a lot of trouble and have to bear great losses because of inadequate or lack of storage facilities within the country. Here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this important new initiative by the government.

According to an article which was recently published by the Economic Times or ET, a total capacity of 700 lakh tonnes will be created over the next five years under the programme. This will be the largest grain storage programme in the world in the cooperative sector.
There will be a total of eleven godowns in Primary Agricultural Credit Societies or PACS in a number of Indian states. At the event, PM Modi inaugurated a total of 11 godowns by 11 PACS in 11 states. This move was undertaken to help alleviate the loss that farmers have to bear on account of not having adequate storage facilities.
By using these large storage facilities, the farmers will be able to store their produce in these warehouses and godowns and sell them when the price is feasible. This will allow them to get institutional credit against their produce.

The programme will see an investment of a whopping ₹1.25 lakh crore. While speaking at the event, PM Modi also mentioned that cooperatives should work towards reducing imports of food items in the country. These include edible oils and pulses as well as fertilisers.
He also talked about how a different ministry is also working towards strengthening cooperatives across the country.
