In a shocking incident, a Chinese cab driver in Singapore was caught on camera hurling abuses at a woman, assuming she was Indian. The video circulating on social media is quite a shock for many as it brings to light an incident of racism in an otherwise peaceful country of Singapore.

Singapore Cab Driver Hurls Racist Words At Passenger

According to a report by WION, 46-year-old Janelle Hoeden, a woman of Eurasian origin and her 9-year-old daughter hailed a TADA cab in Singapore. Janelle Hoeden booked the cab on September 23, around 2 p.m. in the afternoon. As per reports in The Straits Times, initially, the ride proceeded smoothly. However, the driver suddenly became infuriated after facing road construction issues in the Pasir Ris housing estate.

The driver, frustrated, started shouting at the passenger, accusing her of giving him the wrong address and directions. Assuming she was of Indian origin, the Singaporean Chinese cab driver said that she was Indian and stupid. The Singaporean-Chinese driver called her “the very worst kind”. In the viral video, Janelle Hoeden could be heard telling him that she would shoot his video and put it up on Facebook. The driver also alleged that the woman’s daughter was 1.35m in height and as per the Land Transport Authority (LTA) she needed to have a booster seat.

The Driver Assumed She Was Indian & Said Hurtful Things

On her part, Hoeden corrected the Chinese driver and told him she was a Singaporean Eurasian and not an Indian. According to a report by WION, the woman said she was afraid that the verbally abusive driver may get physical with her. So, she decided to record a video of him. She further added that whether she had tan skin or was an Indian, it was still unacceptable for him to treat her that way.

She said it was uncalled for especially the way he pulled out her race card. The incident left both Janelle Hoeden and her daughter traumatised. The ride-hailing platform, TADA responded on Instagram that they won’t tolerate any incident of racism, abuse or discrimination.

Meanwhile, the company announced an internal investigation into the matter. A TADA spokesperson even said that the racial remarks violate the community’s guidelines and do not reflect the company’s values.
