The cliche "I got lots of DMs on the budget needed for a trip to Japan, so I'll make a thread" is here.
Spoiler : I'm going to estimate it to 1L – 1.3L for 10 days. Maybe you can do it for lesser.
Here's a breakdown⬇️ pic.twitter.com/fHrCNfFlKA

X (formerly Twitter) user, @tan_ya_, recently visited Japan and of course, many people asked her how much a trip to the “Land Of The Rising Sun” cost her. So, being a helpful Netizen, she shared a rough estimate that suggested a trip to Japan for a solo traveller can cost around ₹1 – 1.3 lakh for 10 days. That’s not all, she posted some well-laid-out information and a breakdown of the budget to help you plan better.
✈️ flights
mine – 60k via ANA(from DEL)
You can get it for cheaper if you use Vietjet or avail ANA’s current sale price.(~40k)
Visa : 1300 (you don’t need an agent)
ez process even easier now with the new update.Sim/internet: 2k

According to her post, it’s best to book flights to Japan during the sale season, especially for airlines like VietJet Air and ANA. These flights can cost you around ₹40,000 if booked on sale. Otherwise, it can be anywhere around ₹60,000 in a no-sale period. Furthermore, she mentions that you can get an e-visa to Japan for ₹1,300. She even shared details about SIM plans and the internet in this post.
Hostels🏘️
For me everything was pretty last minute + peak season hence almost everything was ~4/5k.
Let’s say you’re wiser & book at least 2 months in advance. You can get them for ~2-2.5k or maybe lesser. I’ll take (2kx10) as my approximation.

She also shared the hostel budget in the post. According to Tania, if you book a trip to Japan at least two months in advance, then you can get hostels for around ₹2,000-2,5000.

Details About Internal Commute, Food & More
Further in her post, Tania mentioned the budget for inter and intra-city commutes. One can take the Shinkansen, regular trains, and also buses to commute inter-city in Japan.
Inter city commute🚄
I did Shinkansen both ways to & fro Tokyo<-> Osaka, because why not. It costed me around 15k.
Let’s say you do it one way only & use busses/regular trains instead for the return journey.
I’ll take 7k+3k here.
— Tania ✈️ (@tan_ya_) April 9, 2024
However, it is important to note that intra-city travel in Japan can be expensive. So, do take note of that.
Intra city commute🚉
This is kinda expensive, even the metros. You can optimize this with passes.
I don’t know exactly how much I spent here. 800 yen to 1800yen?? Let’s take an average of ₹700/day. Mayyybe more/less, correct me if I’m wrong.

Coming to food, Tania notes that a good meal can cost you around ₹400-600. She even explained how there are limited vegetarian food options in Japan, while it is a haven for non-vegetarians.
Food🧑🍳
If a vegetarian, you have limited options. If not, you’ll have a blast.
Take 400-600/ good meal.
Let’s average food to 1.2k/day. But you can always starve and spend lesser.

She then went on to give a breakdown of shopping and souvenirs and how you can make the most of your trip by planning it in advance.
Attractions: 🎎
veryyy relative again. Let’s take 5k if you visit any.Souvenirs + shopping: 🛍️
I would not want to recall how much I spent here.I think ANA’s scheme also includes inter city travel in the 40k. So you can save another 10k but don’t miss out on the Shinkansen🤡
— Tania ✈️ (@tan_ya_) April 9, 2024
I think if you do everything right, plan in advance and keep tabs on your spending, you can do it under 1L too (~85-90k with the ANA sale thingie)
