You May Soon Need A QR Code To Enter Mussoorie & Here’s All About It!

pre-registration Mussoorie

You may soon no longer be able to plan a spontaneous trip to Mussoorie! Uttarakhand is planning to roll out a mandatory pre-registration system for tourists visiting Mussoorie. Visitors would need to register online and present a QR code to enter Mussoorie during peak seasons. With this move, the state authorities hope to tackle the issues of overcrowding and traffic snarls in the hill station.

Mussoorie May Roll Out Pre-Registration During Peak Tourist Season

According to The Economic Times, Mussoorie, a crowd favourite escape in the North, witnessed a massive rise in tourist numbers last year. Official data shows more than 21 lakh visitors were reported in the hill station in 2024, a drastic rise from the 11 lakh reported in 2022. To tackle the issue of overcrowding, state authorities have proposed a mandatory pre-registration system for tourists visiting Mussoorie.

Under this proposed plan, all tourists will need to register online before arriving at the hill station. They will need to provide details and obtain a QR code for entry to Mussoorie. They will set up three checkpoints–Kimadi, Kempty Fall, and Kuthal Gate–and entry will be denied without this code.

Reports suggest that tourists will be required to fill out a form online as part of this mandatory pre-registration system. Data will include information on the number of tourists, their contact and vehicle details, accommodation, and duration of the visit. They will then receive a one-time password (OTP) on their phones to complete the process. For foreign tourists, an email will be shared on their official email addresses. Upon completion, visitors will be issued a QR code that will be verified at the checkpoints.

Massive Tourism Surge

As mentioned before, the massive tourism surge compelled authorities to come up with a mandatory pre-registration system for tourists visiting Mussoorie. There have been growing concerns about overcrowding and traffic congestion in the hill station, especially during weekends and holiday periods. The Mussoorie Hotel Association and other local businesses have asked the authorities to come up with a permanent solution to this issue. For now, this proposal suggests implementing pre-registration only during peak seasons.
