Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the UAE. Located in Abu Dhabi the capital of the United Arab Emirates visitors are welcomed here to come and see the beauty of the mosque. Here are top 5 facts about the mosque 

1. 24-Carat Gold Gilded Chandeliers

The mosque has seven crystal chandeliers which are designed and made by Faustig. All the chandeliers are made from gilded stainless steel and gilded brass which has a total of 40 kg gold of 24 carats galvanized gold. The main prayer hall consists of one of the world’s largest chandelier that weigh twelve tonnes which consists of 15 meters in height and 10 meters in diameter.

2. Lunar Illumination

The lighting system at the mosque was designed to reflect Lunar illumination which means it reflects the phases of the moon. The domes and façade are projected with a bluish grey colour. With the help of twenty-two light towers, it is able to project different shades as the moon progresses through its cycle. You can experience darker cloud effects during the early stages of the month and brighter effects during a full moon.

3. World Largest Hand-Knotted Carpet

The mosque is also home to the world largest hand-knotted carpet which placed in the main prayer hall which is spread across 5,700 square meters. It was designed by, Dr Ali Khaliqi who is a carpet maker and artist. It was handcrafted by 1200 artist which took approximately 12 months for knotting and 8 months for designing the carpet. The carpet consist of 70 per cent wool and 30 per cent of cotton.

4. Pure White Marbles 

The founder of the mosque Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may Allah rest his soul in peace was fond of the colour white as it signifies purity and piety. In the main prayer hall, the marble is featured with unique floral artwork that features traditional geometrical Islamic designs.

5. 1096 Columns 

The arcade around the mosque has 1096 columns. Each column has been hand carved by the craftsmen on the site with the help of “Pietra Dura” a special inlay technique. The outer columns are made of white marble panels, inlaid with precious and semiprecious stones such as lapis lazuli, red agate, amethyst, abalone shell and nacre.
