What Is It?

Roopkund Lake in the high Indian Himalayas in a frozen lake more than 16,000 feet above sea level. Also known as a ‘Mystery Lake‘, upon melting each year, it reveals an unnerving sight of skeletons of more than 300 people & hence it is also called ‘Skeleton Lake’.

Whats In It?

Located at the bottom of a small valley in the Himalayas, in Chamoli district, Uttaranchal in India, Roopkund Lake is a popular destination for adventurous tourists as it is a wonderful trek to get here. The lake is shallow with its greatest depth around 2 meters. You will be also intrigues by the number of skeletal remains found here.

The lake is frozen for most part of the year and the ice melts away during one month of the year. At the bottom as the lake melts are hundreds of mysterious human skeletons and there have been efforts put to find out who were and and how did they get buried here.

How To Reach?

Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehraoon, Uttrakhand
Nearest Rail Head: Kathgodam, Uttrakhand
Route Hubs: Devprayag – Rudraprayag – Karanprayag – Tharali – Debal – Mundoli – Lohajung
Travel to Lohajung or Wan by road.

From there you reach Ran ki dhar by climbing a hillock at Wan.

And then, the way is Kathgodam to Ranikhet to Garur to Gwaldam to Debal (1220 m) to Bagrigad (1890 m) to Mundoli village to Lohajung pass to Wan village (2590 m) to Bedni Bugyal (3660 m) to Baghubasa to Kalu Vinayak to Roopkund
