An African safari is the kind of holiday that can make the flight booking alone look intimidating. But if the dream is really about being out in the wild, bumping along a forest track in an open jeep and hoping a tiger appears between the trees, our country gives you plenty of options for wildlife safaris in India. Here are five places where the jungle, rather than the price tag, gets to be the star.

5 Indian Wildlife Safaris For A Budget-Friendly Jungle Holiday

1. Ranthambore, Rajasthan

Ranthambore is a particularly good choice if you want wildlife with a dramatic backdrop. The reserve has lakes, rocky terrain, dry forests and the famous Ranthambore Fort overlooking the landscape. Tigers are the big draw, but the drives can also bring you face-to-face with sambar, spotted deer, sloth bears, leopards and plenty of birds. A gypsy can take up to six visitors, which matters when you’re working out the cost for a good wildlife safari in India. 

Approximate budget for 2 nights/3 days, per person:

• Budget stay: ₹2,500-₹4,500 for two nights when two people share a room

2. Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand

Jim Corbett makes a lot of sense for a short break, especially if you’re travelling from Delhi or elsewhere in North India. Its landscape moves from riverbeds and grasslands to dense forest, and different zones offer different scenery. Apart from tigers, elephants, leopards, deer, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species are part of the park’s wildlife. You can easily make this a wildlife-first weekend without needing a long itinerary for a wildlife safari in India.

Approximate budget for 2 nights/3 days, per person:

• Budget stay: ₹3,000-₹5,000 for two nights when sharing a room.
• Two private jeep safaris: the current official Indian permit is ₹3,380 per person per safari, with vehicle and guide charges added separately. 
• Alternative: the official tariff lists the Dhikala canter at ₹1,500 + 18% GST per person. 
• Food: ₹1,200-₹2,000.
• Local transport: ₹500-₹1,000.
• Estimated total with two jeep safaris, excluding travel to Corbett: around ₹15,000-₹22,000 per person.

Money-saving tip: Do one jeep safari and one canter safari instead of paying for two jeep drives. It gives you two forest outings without making both of them the expensive option.

3. Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh

Bandhavgarh feels properly wild, with sal forests, hills, valleys, meadows and water bodies packed into the reserve. Its core tourism zones include Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli, while buffer areas provide additional safari options. Tigers are naturally the headline attraction, but keep your eyes open for leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, deer and birds. The surrounding landscape is reason enough to spend a morning here with the windows down and your camera ready.

• Two safari drives: approximately ₹4,000-₹7,000 per person, depending on the zone, date and whether you choose a single seat or vehicle.

Madhya Pradesh’s current system offers both single-seat and full-vehicle safari permits, while vehicle and guide charges are collected separately. 

Money-saving tip: For two people, don’t automatically take the whole gypsy. A single-seat safari can make far more sense when you’re not travelling with a group.

4. Tadoba-Andhari, Maharashtra

Tadoba is a great pick when the main purpose of the trip is to spend as much time in the forest as possible. The reserve’s dry forests and open stretches make for classic jeep-safari scenery, and both morning and afternoon drives are available. You can choose between core and buffer areas, so there is room to build a trip around the amount you’re comfortable spending.

• Two weekday core safaris: ₹11,600 for two safari bookings, or ₹5,800 per booking for Indian tourists travelling Monday to Friday

• Food: ₹1,200-₹2,000
• Local transport: ₹1,000-₹2,000
• Estimated total, excluding travel to Tadoba: ₹8,700-₹14,500 per person for two people sharing a room and doing two weekday safaris.

A separate ₹250 camera charge applies. 

Money-saving tip: If your dates are flexible, make the trip a weekday one. The current core safari difference is ₹1,000 per booking between Monday-Friday and Saturday-Sunday. 

5. Pench, Madhya Pradesh

The forest has teak and mixed deciduous vegetation, open meadows and water bodies, and the Madhya Pradesh side offers both core and buffer safari areas. Tigers are possible, but the wildlife list goes well beyond them; leopards, wild dogs, deer and a huge range of birds all call the landscape home. It is also a good option if you want a quieter-feeling jungle break rather than a packed sightseeing itinerary.

• Budget stay: ₹2,500-₹4,000 for two nights when sharing.
• Two safari drives: approximately ₹3,500-₹6,000 per person, depending on the safari zone and whether you get a single seat or share a vehicle.

• Estimated total, excluding long-distance travel: ₹8,200-₹13,500 per person.

Money-saving tip: Two people don’t need to carry the cost of an entire vehicle. Look at single-seat availability first, particularly if you’re travelling without a larger group.

For the jungle portion alone, around ₹10,000-₹20,000 per person is a sensible working budget for several of these trips. The big wildcard is getting there. Someone travelling to Ranthambore by train from Delhi can have a very different final bill from someone flying to central India and then hiring a car.

And that is where the smartest savings usually happen; choose the reserve that is easiest to reach from your city, share the safari vehicle where possible, and spend on the forest rather than a fancy room for an amazing wildlife safari in India. The tiger, unfortunately, does not care how much you paid for either.
