This is not the first time houses in Bowbazar developed cracks due to metro tunnel construction work. Earlier in May, the authorities had to evacuate residents of five houses owning to cracks. In 2019, several houses in Bowbazar’s Durga Pituri area had crumbled down after the tunnel boring work in the region struck a water reservoir, forcing over 350 residents to relocate to other locations. The KMRC had stated that it would rebuild the houses of the residents. As per reports, it had also sought international help for damage control.

Bowbazar, One Of The Oldest Neighbourhoods In Kolkata

Bowbazar is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Kolkata, lined up with many century-old timeworn houses. Many of these buildings are no longer in a state to withstand challenges. In the most ancient alleys of Central and North Kolkata, collapsing of brick structures and portions of old buildings isn’t rare. And when it rains, the risk multiplies. The tunnel construction work near these buildings is making them more vulnerable to cracks and falls.
