The South-Central Railway authorities are modernising the iconic Secunderabad Railway Station in Hyderabad. On Friday, they began the demolition of the 151-year-old railway station as part of its ₹720 crore modernisation project. This renovation project aims to turn the iconic railway station into a world-class transit hub and here’s all you need to know about it.
Secunderabad Railway Station Razed Down
Built in 1874 and remodelled in 1952, the Secunderabad Junction is a historic railway station in Hyderabad. It is one of the oldest railway stations in India and it is now being demolished as part of a renovation project. This project aims to turn the old junction into a modern station with world-class facilities. According to the Hindustan Times, the railway authorities are hoping to remodel the station in line with international airports.

On Friday, the demolition of the main terminal building on the northern side was carried out. The railway authorities are carrying out the renovation work without disturbing the passenger flow. The entire demolition would be completed within a week. Furthermore, they expect to complete the construction within a year.
All You Need To Know About This Renovation Project
The project cost for Secunderabad Railway Station renovation is around ₹720 crore. Reportedly, the modernised station will have terminal buildings on the northern and southern sides. They will have ground plus three floors, a double-storey sky concourse, two 7.5-metre-wide travelators on either side, 26 lifts, 32 escalators, two wide footbridges, and multi-level and underground parking facilities.
Furthermore, the northern terminal will be built comparable to an airport. It will have spacious lounges, modernised ticket counters, air-conditioned waiting halls, seating arrangements, retail outlets, food courts, cafeterias, and more amenities for the passengers.
