Have you caught the boba tea AKA bubble tea fever? Well, we don’t blame you as the iced tea laced with tapioca pearls has created waves in India. Sold in pretty colours and unusual flavours, this beverage is refreshing and ‘Gram-worthy. Yet it may not be healthy. So, to make it a better-for-you beverage, follow these doctor-approved tips the next time you crave bubble tea.

Internet’s favourite gastroenterologist and content creator Dr. Pal Manickam’s latest reel is specifically directed to all bubble tea lovers. In his reel, Dr. Pal informs that traditional bubble tea is made with tea. However, the bubble tea sold these days is made with sugar syrup. A single serving contains 30g of sugar which is more than the recommended limit. When it comes to tapioca pearls, these are made of starch extracted from the tuber, tapioca. It’s high in carbs but low in nutritional value.

Moreover, the tapioca pearls are cooked in sugar syrup which is again harmful to one’s health. So, Dr. Pal’s first tip for bubble tea lovers would be to ask for less sugar in bubble tea. The second tip is to choose aloe vera pearls or fruit jellies instead of tapioca pearls for a lower-calorie option. The doctor’s third tip, the most difficult one, would be to consume this drink once in six months. Sorry to burst your bubble!

Netizens Prefer Skipping The Sugary Drink

In his caption, he asks his followers if they can resist the boba trap. Garnering 4000 likes, the gut health expert’s reel has left boba tea lovers with a bitter-sweet feeling. Bitter because he listed the cons of consuming the drink. Sweet as he has shared a few tips to keep in mind while placing boba tea orders.

One commentator said no wonder they gained weight after consuming bubble tea thrice a week. Others commented that haven’t tried the drink yet and don’t intend to after watching his video. Some Instagrammers thanked him for giving alternatives to tapioca pearls. A person even recommended a 4th tip— not to consume it at all.
