30-YO Kerala Man Travelled Without Ticket On Mangalore-Coimbatore Express; Got 15 Days Jail Time

Travelling without tickets should never be an option for anyone. If any passenger gets caught catching a train ticketless on the Indian Railways, he/she will need to pay a fine or even go to jail like a recent incident. We usually have heard about train passengers paying a penalty for breaking rules and not buying tickets while travelling on a train. In a recent shocking incident, a man from Kerala has been sentenced to jail for travelling ticketless.

Mohammed Shafi is a man from Kerala who recently got jailed for 15 days. This man from Vallapuzha was travelling on the Mangalore-Coimbatore Express back on April 27, according to a report by Mathrubhumi English. He boarded the express train from Tirur and his destination was Palakkad. This 30-year-old passenger was travelling without a ticket. On that train journey, he was caught by the concerned railway authorities and faced a penalty charge as well.

But Shafi did not pay the fine on that day. As he did not agree to pay the penalty charge and ticket cost, the authorities of the Kozhikode ticket checking division handed this incident to the Shoranpur Railway Protection Force. They filed a complaint against the man who travelled on the Mangalore-Coimbatore Express without a ticket. Only after lodging the case, Shafi was granted bail.

But the story did not end with the bail only. Mohammed Shafi neither paid the fine nor appeared at the court. The court that he was supposed to go to was at the Shoranur Railway Magistrate. With nothing from the 30-year-old man’s side, the authorities issued the summons. Following this, the court ordered the jailing of Shafi. An arrest warrant was issued against the ticketless traveller.

If Shafi had paid the fine and charges on that day, he would not have had to see a day where he needed to be in jail for 15 days. This punishment by the court clearly shows how travelling without tickets can be a major violation of rules and norms and the conclusions can be scary.
