‘80% Of IT Employees Are Overweight’ Highlights A Study

A recent research carried out by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) hospitals has indicated a worrying trend of IT manpower obesity in Hyderabad. As reported by Telangana Today via Daily Hunt, the survey among IT employees in Hitec City indicates that an astonishing 80% of the manpower is overweight. Experts have warned that this increasing health problem could result in serious medical complications, putting an additional burden on the nation’s healthcare system.

As per Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy, the founder chairman of AIG Hospitals, the IT industry’s high obesity level is shocking. While it is a serious issue, many professionals fail to address the issue.

He emphasised that prevention is the most important factor in avoiding health complications and conserving medical costs. Obesity-related conditions such as heart disease, liver disease, and diabetes can be a heavy burden on individuals and the health system.

Besides this, sedentary work culture, overtime work, and physical inactivity are major factors responsible for the increasing obesity among IT workers. Experts emphasise the necessity of bringing lifestyle changes, which include daily exercise and improved diet, to meet the challenge successfully.

The research also points to a parallel obesity epidemic among children in Hyderabad. AIG Hospitals surveyed government schools and found that 40% of the students have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Dr. Reddy cautioned that obesity is now a current crisis and not a future issue anymore. If not addressed, the healthcare system will be overwhelmed, increasing medical costs and health problems even more.

Dr. Reddy also noted that obesity is not only a Western issue. According to studies, 60% of Indians are overweight, and 30% are at risk of obesity. This epidemic is also causing the rise of heart disease, lung problems, and kidney complications.

Experts say people and employers must put health and well-being first in order to combat the rising obesity trend among working India.

The increasing levels of obesity among Hyderabad’s IT employees and children are a wake-up call to all of us. It is a reminder that our sedentary, frenetic lifestyles have a price, and health needs to be a priority no longer but a necessity. Small steps, like taking short breaks to stand up and stretch, eating well, and encouraging workplace well-being, can together make a massive difference.
