90% Himalayan Areas At Severe Drought Risk If Global Warming Increases By 3° Celsius: Study

It is the most human trait to take things for granted. For example, things like our environment and ecosystem. We tend to overlook global warming warnings and believe it’ll all come together and be fine. Well, this new study says otherwise. According to the study, around 90% of the Himalayas are likely to experience a year-long drought if global warming increases by 3° Celsius. This is quite alarming as the Himalayas are believed to be permanently frozen areas.

A study published in the journal Climatic Change suggests that 90% of the Himalayas will experience a year-long drought if global warming increases by 3° Celsius. This study was carried out by researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK. They quantified risks to human and natural systems with an increase in levels of global warming.

They carried out eight studies that showed high risks of “drought, flooding, declines in crop yields, and loss of biodiversity and natural capital” with an increase in global warming. These studies were focused on India, Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Ghana. For India, the report also found that pollination has been “reduced by half at 3-4 degrees global warming compared to a quarter reduction at 1.5 degrees.”

What Can Help Avoid This Disastrous Condition?

The study further showed that 80% of the increased human exposure to heat stress in India can be avoided. For that, the country needs to adhere to the Paris Agreement’s temperature goals of limiting global warming to 1.5° Celsius. Following steps to maintain this temperature can help avoid agricultural loss, economic damage, and most importantly environmental damage! It will also help avoid the expected drought in the Himalayas.

Although these studies were carried out in the above-mentioned countries, the researchers believe that other countries can face similar challenges if due measures are not taken on time. They suggest balancing steps for climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation to fulfil the goal of saving the environment.

This study should definitely be the wake-up call for authorities and people, in general. It is time we understand how climate change and global warming can harm us in the long run.
