From Ramadan safety drives on UAE streets to weather warnings sweeping across the region, the Gulf is moving fast this week. If you like your news short, sharp, and actually useful, here’s a snapshot of the biggest GCC updates you should know right now.
5 Key GCC Updates
1. RAK Police Clamp Down On Ramadan Begging
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Ramadan generosity is deeply intertwined with the sociocultural fabric. This year, the Ras Al Khaimah Police Department has initiated its annual anti-begging campaign. It’s urging residents to stay alert as a result of a noticeable rise in the number of beggars at this time of the year during the holy month. The initiative, according to Gulf News, focuses on building public awareness through social and local media, highlighting the social and security threats of organised begging. Officials encourage citizens not to directly engage with beggars and direct their donations to legitimate charitable organisations.
2. Fog Delays UAE Mornings, Saudi Prepares Stormy Days
The morning commutes are still hindered by persistent fog in several parts of the UAE, with significant traffic delays recorded in Sharjah. The National Centre of Meteorology has cautioned that limited visibility can still occur in the early hours, especially in coastal and inland areas, although conditions will improve later, and evening fog may recur due to humidity. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, faces conflicting weather conditions. The National Centre of Meteorology has announced alerts of dust storms, windy weather, and rough seas until Saturday.
3. Abu Dhabi Lights Up During Ramadan-Literally
Abu Dhabi has been experiencing a glowing metamorphosis throughout the ongoing Ramadan. The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has mounted over 5,200 light fixtures in major roadways, bridges, islands, and peri-districts. The crescent patterns, starlings, archways, and geometrical designs now adorn the daily commutes, providing a festive effect. Based on the conventional traditions, including the Ramadan cannon, the installations express the principles of generosity, unity, and compassion, transforming regular streets into humble reminders about the mood of the season.
4. Oman To Nominate Bisya And Salut For UNESCO Heritage List
The sites of Bisya and Salut are being actively sought by Oman to receive international heritage status. Preparations are underway to nominate these sites to the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name Salut: An Iron Age Settlement by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. The two-year nomination process includes speciality research and a site management plan. The current archaeological excavations in Italy and France keep producing traces of early settlements, trading routes, and farming techniques, which only contribute to strengthening the sites in the context of the larger historical narrative.
