Abu Dhabi just gave its date palms a paperwork upgrade. The Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority (ADHA) just launched a project called “Documentation of New Date Palm Varieties”. It was announced this week at the 22nd Liwa Date Festival in Al Dhafra, which runs until 23 July. The tagline sums up the intent pretty well: scientific documentation, protecting rights, supporting sustainability.

Farmers across the UAE have quietly been cultivating new date palm varieties for years, cross-breeding and experimenting with growing conditions. Until now, no official standard procedure has been introduced to record and recognise these homegrown date palm trees.
ADHA Chairman Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei described it as a step toward standardising the conditions and criteria that support the country’s agricultural heritage sector, essentially bringing modern scientific rigour to something that’s traditionally been passed down through instinct and inherited knowledge.
For the UAE, that matters more than it might sound because the date palm isn’t just any regular tree but basically a national symbol. Also, it’s woven into everything from cuisine to cultural identity.

Farmers Finally Get Their Due
Acting Director General Abdullah Mubarak Al Muhairi framed the project as a way of celebrating the people actually doing the innovating: the farmers themselves. Once a new variety is documented and meets the required standards, it gets officially catalogued and recognised, which, in practice, means farmers finally get credit (and possibly rights protection) for varieties they’ve developed over years of trial and error.

The timing isn’t a coincidence. The announcement dropped in the middle of the Liwa Date Festival, one of the region’s most-watched agricultural and cultural events, where growers from across Al Dhafra come to showcase their harvests. Slotting a heritage-meets-science initiative into that spotlight makes sense; it’s exactly the audience ADHA needs on board.
It’s a clear signal that Abu Dhabi wants its date palm sector treated with the same rigour as any other heritage asset worth protecting.
