UAE’s 4.5 Million Indians Are Marking 80 Years Of Independence With Flags, Reels & Rangoli!

India turns 80 this Independence Day, and the UAE’s Indian community isn’t just watching from afar. The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of India in Dubai have planned a full calendar of events. From dawn flag hoisting to a first-of-its-kind digital relay tracing the sunrise across the globe, it runs until August 15.

Flag Hoisting At Dawn

Both missions will host their onsite celebrations from 6.30 am on August 15, with the flag-hoisting ceremony itself set for 7 am. Indian Ambassador to the UAE Dr Deepak Mittal will unfurl the tricolour at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi. At the same time, Consul General Dr E. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy does the honours in Dubai. Both missions have thrown the invite open to the wider Indian community and friends of India, continuing a tradition that plays out every year at missions and community associations across the country.

The Surya Path Tiranga Relay

Surya Path Tiranga, a symbolic global relay that follows the rising sun from east to west, is a new event to look forward to. It’s linking Indian missions abroad from Fiji all the way to the United States in a coordinated worldwide flag-hoisting showcase. It’s a fitting way to mark a milestone year, connecting time zones and communities in a single unbroken thread of celebration.

Har Ghar Tiranga, Now Round The Clock

The Ministry of Culture’s Har Ghar Tiranga campaign runs from August 9 to 17 this year. It encourages India’s roughly 4.5 million-strong expat community in the UAE to hoist the flag at home and share a selfie on harghartiranga.com. Under the updated Flag Code of India, the tricolour can now stay hoisted both day and night. It’ breaking the old sunset-to-sunrise rule. This year’s celebrations also mark 150 years of Vande Mataram, with collective singing planned at cultural programmes across the UAE. Also, expect a learning tutorial available on the Har Ghar Tiranga website for anyone who wants to brush up before the big day.

The Bharat Ko Janiye quiz returns for its Independence Day edition, giving NRIs, PIOs and foreign nationals three minutes and 30 seconds to answer 10 questions on India. The UAE’s top scorer wins a prize from the Consulate on August 15. Meanwhile, the top five participants will be felicitated at the Embassy and Consulate celebrations.

The Consulate is looking for a 30-second reel on Instagram from expats in Dubai and the Northern Emirates tagging @india_in_dubai and using #IndiaInDubai and #IndependenceDay2026 as part of the #MyIndiaStory campaign. Whereas, the Embassy’s parallel # IndiaInUAE drive, residents across Abu Dhabi are asked to share a one-minute reel on what India means to them, tagging @india_in_uae. The most inspiring entries from both drives will be showcased on the missions’ official social media platforms.
