Rajkummar Rao may have grown up in Gurgaon, but during the latest Sunday Brunch with Kamiya Jani and Ujjwal Nikam, he got a very convincing introduction to what a proper Maharashtrian meal looks like. The conversation, which also touched upon Rajkummar’s film and his experience around the story, eventually landed exactly where all good conversations should: food.

Rajkummar Rao Gets A Proper Maharashtrian Thali Experience

Kamiya Jani asked Rajkummar whether he had actually eaten a Maharashtrian thali during the shoot. He said he had tried Maharashtrian food before. Ujjwal Nikam, however, seemed to think that was not enough.

So, they decided to feed the Gurgaon boy properly.

And by properly, they meant an entire Maharashtrian spread laid out in front of him.

There was baingan ka bharta, except Ujjwal Nikam was quick to clarify that this was not the generic version one might expect. He described it as a typically Maharashtrian preparation and confidently claimed that you would not find this particular version just anywhere.

Then came the sev ki sabzi, followed by bhindi, pulao, bhakri and singdana ki roti. Ujjwal Nikam had another prediction for that one. Once Kamiya Jani tasted the peanut-based roti, he said, she would definitely be asking for more.

The most personal addition to the table was the seviyan. Ujjwal Nikam revealed that his daughter had prepared it with coconut milk, giving the dessert a distinctly homemade touch. It was the kind of detail that made the enormous spread feel less like a thali being served for cameras and more like someone had actually invited Rajkummar Rao and Kamiya Jani home for lunch.

There was also thecha and, naturally, a modak.

Kamiya Jani then turned the meal into a little pop quiz, asking Rajkummar Rao if he could identify the dishes in front of him. Despite being confronted with an entire Maharashtrian food syllabus, the actor spotted the modak.

Honestly, not a bad answer!

By the end, the Sunday Brunch table had managed to do something the interview alone probably couldn’t: give Rajkummar Rao a crash course in Maharashtrian food, one bhakri, sev ki sabzi and coconut-milk seviyan at a time. And Ujjwal Nikam was clearly taking the responsibility of feeding his guest very seriously.
