Traffic congestion during major sporting events like the ICC World Cup is a significant concern. With thousands of fans, players, and officials converging on host cities, the roadways become a hassle. The Chennai Traffic Police have issued traffic advice in advance of the city’s five ICC World Cup matches, which begin on Sunday at the city’s Chepauk Stadium.

New Traffic Rules In Chennai On Match Days

One of the primary challenges related to traffic during the ICC World Cup is the sheer volume of people and vehicles on the road. Cricket is a popular sport worldwide, and World Cup events draw fans from all corners of the globe. To alleviate key crowded traffic regions, the Chennai traffic police have issued traffic recommendations that will aid in decongesting traffic during match days.

The matches will take place on October 8, 13, 18, 23, and 27. On these days, traffic diversions would be in force from 12 p.m. until 10 p.m. The Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) announced on Saturday that the roads leading to the MA Chidambaram Stadium will be restricted to one-way traffic.

Traffic Diversions To Note

However, the diversions were introduced on a trial basis beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday and will last for a week.

According to the Chennai Traffic Police advisory –

  • Victoria Hostel Road is one way with entry from Bharathi Salai and Victoria Hotel Road intersection. Entry from Wallajah Road and Victoria Hotel Road junction prohibited
  • City buses departing from Kannagi Statue will be denied access to Bells Road. Reroute at the Bharathi Salai-Bells Road junction towards Ratna Cafe.
  • Vehicles with alphabets ‘B’ and ‘R’ on their number plates from Anna Salai onto Wallajah Road would be denied access to Bells Road. They will be directed to park at MRTS and Pattabiraman Gate.
  • Vehicles exiting the War Memorial and the Gandhi Statue with passes displaying the letters ‘M,’ ‘T,’ and ‘V’ are restricted to Bharathi Salai, Canal Road. Other vehicles will be routed to the Foreshore Service Road to park.
  • Vehicles coming from the War Memorial and Gandhi Statue with passes having the letters ‘B’ and ‘R’ will be able to park at MRTS and Pattabiraman Gate via., Bharathi Salai, Bells Road, and Wallajah Road. But not at Labour Statue towards Wallajah Road
