In a tense and alarming turn of events on Friday, October 4, an Air India Express flight bound for Muscat was forced to abort its take-off from Thiruvananthapuram airport after suspected smoke was detected during the take-off process. Flight IX549, carrying 148 passengers, was preparing for departure when the cabin filled with an unusual odour and suspected smoke, sending panic ripples through the aircraft.

The flight, scheduled to depart at 8 am, had already experienced a two-hour delay and was in the final stages of its take-off when the situation unfolded. Alerted by the strong smell and sight of what appeared to be smoke, passengers quickly raised the alarm, with many shouting for help. This led to chaotic moments onboard as the crew swiftly reacted to ensure everyone’s safety.

Airport officials acted immediately, halting the plane’s take-off and initiating emergency procedures. All 148 passengers were safely evacuated, and the aircraft was promptly returned to the bay for a detailed investigation, as per the India Tv News. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the evacuation.

Smoke Scare Triggered Emergency Response

In response to the incident, an Air India Express representative expressed regret for the inconvenience but emphasised the airline’s dedication to safety. He stated that one of the planes had returned to the Thiruvananthapuram airport’s bay because of what appeared to be smoke during takeoff. According to India TV News, the spokesperson also confirmed that a different aircraft had been booked for the guests’ subsequent travel. He mentioned that the replacement flight was slated to take off later in the day at approximately 4:10 pm.

The spokesperson reassured that safety is their top priority and that all necessary procedures are being followed. They also sincerely apologised for any inconvenience this caused to the passengers. An investigation will be carried out to determine the precise nature of the issue.

For the passengers on board Flight IX549, what began as a routine journey turned into a frightening episode. However, with the timely response of the flight crew and airport authorities, the situation was handled efficiently, ensuring the safety of all onboard. 

While the cause of the smoke remains unclear pending investigation, the passengers will continue their journey on the alternative aircraft.
