In this episode of Sunday Brunch, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, met India’s most feared public prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam, at his Mumbai home with actor Rajkummar Rao. The prosecutor not only opened up about his courtroom career but also talked about a letter Abu Salem, a criminal gangster, sent him from jail.

Ujjwal Nikam Talks About Abu Salem’s Letter

Ujjwal Nikam is not an ordinary prosecutor. He is someone who has worked on prominent murder and terrorism cases. On this Sunday Brunch, Kamiya Jani sat with him over a hearty Maharashtrian meal and learnt all about it. The show saw Ujjwal Nikam opening up about his career, Kasab, a terrorist, and Abu Salem, a criminal gangster.

For this special episode, Rajkummar Rao also joined us as he will be playing Ujjwal Nikam’s character in the upcoming movie, Prahaar. While talking about his career, Ujjwal Nikam opened up about Abu Salem, who had murdered Pradeep Jain, a businessman from Mumbai, before fleeing to Portugal.

Since Abu Salem was a criminal, Ujjwal Nikam was working to get him convicted. But despite this, the two would still talk about various topics. Ultimately, the prosecutor argued against Abu Salem in court, which resulted in a life imprisonment sentence for him.

What Was In The Letter?

At one time, Ujjwal Nikam was not really well, and Abu Salem got to know about it. He wrote a long letter to the prosecutor and asked about his health. Even though Abu Salem was convicted because of Ujjwal Nikam, he still praised the prosecutor in his letter and wrote that he was impressed by him. Abu Salem also told the prosecutor to let him know if he ever needed his help in future.

The prosecutor talked about how no one is born a criminal and how criminals are often not scared of the punishment given to them by the law. But if they start repenting their actions, then that can affect them a lot. Many of them often think they could have been good people. They feel they could have lived a decent life if they had not made wrong choices in life.

All these conversations took place over a Maharashtrian meal consisting of dishes like Baingan Ka Bharta, Tomato Bake, Bhindi, Pulao, Peanut Chapati, and so much more.
