French air traffic controllers belonging to the SNCTA union had initially called for a one-day strike on Thursday, April 25th, threatening significant disruption at Paris’s two major airports: Charles de Gaulle and Orly.  The potential chaos was averted after last-minute negotiations between the union and management resulted in a deal on working conditions and pay increases.

However, the pre-emptive measures taken by airlines in anticipation of the strike caused significant headaches for travellers.  French civil aviation authorities, fearing widespread cancellations, requested airlines to significantly reduce their flight schedules for Thursday at all major Parisian airports.  This resulted in a domino effect, with airlines cancelling flights across Europe due to the anticipated delays and disruptions in Paris.

While some airlines managed to reinstate cancelled flights, others faced operational challenges, leaving numerous travellers stranded or facing delays. The situation exposes the vulnerabilities of modern air travel networks. Cancellations at major hubs like Paris have a cascading effect, impacting flight schedules across Europe and beyond.  Even when strikes are averted, pre-emptive actions can create significant disruptions for travellers.
