The talented Indian cricketer, Ajinkya Rahane, was in conversation with our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, for this interesting episode of the Sunday Brunch. From his early cricket days to IPL matches, from Mumbai locals to Maharashtrian cuisine, we covered it all. The proficient player revealed that he had a black belt in a sport. Spoiler alert, it is not cricket; read on to learn about it.
Ajinkya Rahane Has A Black Belt In?
Cricket isn’t the only sport in which Ajinkya Rahane shines. He is equally skilled in Judo and has a black belt! During childhood, he would practice cricket in the mornings, go to school in the afternoons and attend judo sessions in the evening. From early morning to late evening, his schedule was packed with significant activities.
The motive behind two different sports was to keep him engaged in physical exercises. He shared that with no mobile phones and Internet access, there were hardly any distractions for him. The cricketer was aware that it is better to engage in physical activity rather than to sit idle at home.
After all, it was for the advancement of Ajinkya’s physical and mental well-being. This was the sole intention of practicing cricket and judo simultaneously.

Kamiya was curious to learn how and why Ajinkya Rahane pursued a career in cricket over judo. He revealed, “I was very passionate about cricket since the beginning. Our doctor-neighbour advised my father to sign me up for a cricket coaching academy.” The kind doctor saw potential in Ajinkya’s expert techniques and pushed him to take a step forward in cricket.
His family decided to enrol him in a cricket coaching centre and that is how the whole journey began. Ajinkya recalled the fondest memories of being the youngest player in the under-14 camp. He was honoured to have qualified for the selection matches, thereby being appointed for the under-14 camp as a 10-year-old!
Slowly and steadily, he honed his skills and the rest is history!
