Andhra Pradesh APSRTC Pushes For Safer, More Inclusive Travel For Senior Citizens & PwDs

Recently, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) announced an important initiative to improve travel bus facilities for Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs). Read on to know more about the initiative.

APSRTC’s Initiative For Senior Citizens & PwDs

As per a report by the Indian Express, the initiative comes in response to the growing complaints regarding lapses in amenities and the implementation of concessions meant for senior citizens and PwD passengers. The officials told the portal that several issues had been reported, including improper identification of reserved seats, occupation of such seats by other passengers, and lack of timely interference by staff. Other instances of negligence, where staff failed to ensure the availability of reserved seats or did not extend enough assistance and respect to Senior Citizens and PwDs, were highlighted.

In response to these concerns, APSRTC has issued strict instructions to all depots and units. As per the new initiative, buses must clearly earmark seats for Senior Citizens and PwDs, and staff are directed to intervene wherever necessary to ensure that these seats are vacated and made available to eligible passengers. The corporation emphasised the importance of treating these passengers with courtesy and dignity, warning that any negligence or misconduct would face serious consequences.

All About The New Initiative

To facilitate smooth and easy travel, APSRTC has clarified that valid identity proofs such as Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, PAN cards, and passports, including their digital versions, will only be accepted. As per the news portal, A Appala Raju, Executive Director of Operations, advised that awareness be created through gate meetings and display of instructions on notice boards across all depots.

Additionally, APSRTC stated that the top priority of the bus service remains ensuring safe, dignified, and hassle-free travel for Senior Citizens and PwDs. The corporation assured strict monitoring of services to prevent further complaints. It further promises to fulfil its commitment to provide inclusive and respectful travel facilities for all passengers.
