Assam is reeling under its first flash food of this year. With heavy rains in the state for the past few days, 11 districts with 34,000 people have been impacted by the floods and heavy rains. A bridge made of bamboo in Chirang gave way due to the floods leaving villagers with no option but to travel on dilapidated boats. Here’s what is happening in Assam.
Floods Have Caused Havoc In Assam
According to a report by India Today NE, heavy rains have led to a significant increase in water levels of most rivers in Assam, especially the Brahmaputra. The rising water levels at different places have rivers flowing over the danger mark. This was reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Also, heavy storm in Assam hit several bamboo bridges in the state.

One such bamboo bridge is in Amguri in Chirang. As per sources to India Today NE, the bamboo bridge washed away due to the stream of water flowing down from Bhutan. Having no means of connectivity, people from nearby villages are travelling for safety in dilapidated boats. Villagers have boats with them as they collect money and build these every year during the monsoon season when floods occur.

Bamboo Bridges Broken, Villages Face Landslides & Floods
Floods and heavy rains have created havoc in Assam. many patients died as they were unable to reach hospitals on time and get treatment due to poor connectivity. With bamboo bridges broken, roads clogged and poor weather, they had nowhere to go. Floodwaters have ravaged around 25 villages in Assam’s Nangalbhanga region. Transportation in the state often comes to a halt due to torrential rains and rising river water. Unfortunately, the demand for a bridge over Nangalbhanga river hasn’t been met yet.

Apart from floods, Assam has also reported landslides in parts of Kamrup and Dima Hasao regions. Massive erosions have also happened in regions like Bongaigaon, Biswanath, Karbi, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and more. Lakhimpur is the worst hit out of these with 23,516 people affected. In Dibrugarh, 3857 people are affected. In the last 24 hours, around 5000 people have been affected.
At this time it’s very concerning to see the state of Assam.
