International Big Cat Alliance In Delhi: India & Kazakhstan Collab For Snow Leopard Breeding

IBCA's first assembly in Delhi gained a lot of traction and attention from concerned countries housing big cats in the wild. The guiding foundation was the Headquarters Agreement. Signed with India, this agreement oversees the work plans, manual of staff, financial regulations and rules of procedure. It will set the foundation for collaborative initiatives, operations and effective governance of IBCA.

International Big Cat Alliance In Delhi: India & Kazakhstan Collab For Snow Leopard Breeding

India, along with 94 other countries, is part of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA). The mission of this assembly is to protect and conserve the world’s seven big cats. On June 18, 2025, the International Big Cat Alliance held its very first assembly at its headquarters in Delhi. This assembly in Delhi was attended by ministerial delegations from Kazakhstan, India, Liberia, Cambodia, Bhutan, among others.

International Big Cat Alliance Unites 95 Countries To Achieve Conservation Goals

As per a report by Hindustan Times, IBCA’s first assembly in Delhi gained a lot of traction and attention from concerned countries housing big cats in the wild. The guiding foundation was the Headquarters Agreement. Signed with India, this agreement oversees the work plans, manual of staff, financial regulations and rules of procedure. IBCA will set the foundation for collaborative initiatives, operations and effective governance of IBCA.

The president of IBCA, India’s environment minister, Bhupendra Yadav, was chosen unanimously by the assembly and ministerial delegations. Moreover, SP Yadav was named the director general of the animal conservation body.

The Government of India created IBCA to conserve the Pantherinae subfamily. They are:  Puma, Jaguar, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Lion, Tiger and Leopard. Part of this assembly were delegations from Bhutan, Suriname, Somalia, Cambodia and Eswatini that housed some of these majestic species.

While addressing the assembly, Bhupendra Yadav asked the countries present to collaborate and keep themselves engaged with the programmes of IBCA. Yadav stressed the importance of collective action to conserve these animals that play a vital role in managing the ecosystem. But also spoke about conserving their habitat and collaborating on mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and its impact on the creatures. During the meeting, India also partnered with Kazakhstan to work on now leopard breeding.

What’s The Purpose Of IBCA?

As per the official website of IBCA, its multi-purpose vision includes fostering international cooperation for the conservation of the world’s seven big cat species. Moreover, it focuses on a knowledge-sharing model on the threats to big cats and solutions for the same.

Its formation also includes the need to raise global awareness through outreach programmes and mobilising resources with the international bodies associated with the conservation of the big cats.
