At Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport, Driverless Tractors Will Transport Your Luggage To The Aircraft

Al Maktoum International Airport has introduced six driverless electric tractors to handle luggage transport across the tarmac. Operated by dnata, these autonomous vehicles currently run with Level 3 autonomy and will upgrade to full self-driving.

At Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport, Driverless Tractors Will Transport Your Luggage To The Aircraft

Next time you fly from Al Maktoum International Airport, don’t be surprised if your bags beat you to the aircraft, with no driver in sight. That’s right. Your bags might soon be rolling their way to the aircraft without anyone in the driver’s seat. That’s because dnata has deployed six electric, driverless tractors at Al Maktoum International Airport. These smart machines quietly haul up to four luggage containers at a time, cruising between the terminal and aircraft at around 15km/h, no driver, no fuss. They follow pre-programmed routes, no steering wheel required.

Until now, human drivers handled these transfers under serious time crunches. But with these new autonomous tractors in action, dnata has started reassigning drivers to other airport jobs that need a human brain, not just a steering hand.

Jaffar Dawood, dnata’s Divisional Senior VP for UAE Airport Operations, called the move a game-changer. By taking people out of routine tasks, the airport can boost safety, reduce mistakes, and put trained staff to better use. Think smoother operations, fewer airside mishaps, and less traffic chaos near the planes.

Tractors Take The Wheel, Humans Shift Focus

For a fast-growing airport like Al Maktoum, set to become the world’s largest in capacity, handling up to 260 million passengers annually, these changes are only the beginning.

Right now, these tractors operate with Level 3 autonomy, which means there’s still a human keeping an eye on things. But come 2026, they’ll upgrade to Level 4, where they’ll run completely on their own in controlled spaces. No joystick. No remote control. Just sensors, systems, and smart tech.

It’s Not Just About Today, It’s About Tomorrow

The project didn’t happen overnight. dnata spent over a year working with TractEasy, Dubai Airports, and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority to create proper regulations for autonomous vehicles at airports. Since most global guidelines are still unclear, this move puts Dubai ahead of the curve.

Besides moving baggage, the rollout acts as a live testing ground. The airport wants to figure out what works and what doesn’t, before scaling things up. It’s a way to learn, tweak, and eventually lock in a new model of how future airports will operate.

So if you’re flying out of DWC soon, keep an eye out on the tarmac. That little baggage tractor quietly whirring past your window? It’s driving itself.
