Drugs have been among the most controversial topics. Governments around the world have debated over its use, and many have banned it. And if consumed beyond a limit, these substances have affected the human body in the worst way possible. But, like there are two sides to a coin, drugs also have some medicinal properties that can help cure illnesses, but a doctor’s advice is important. And Australia has recognised this. Recently, they have legalised two drugs only for medicinal use.
Australia Drug Regulation
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has announced that MDMA and psilocybin (magic mushrooms) will soon be prescribed to patients suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, this will come into effect from July 2023. And, Australia will become the first country to legalise the use of psychedelics (a subclass of hallucinogenic drugs) for medicinal purposes. Moreover, these drugs will have limited prescriptions and won’t be used for any other purpose.

TGA Statement On Drugs
According to the statement by Therapeutic Goods Administration, only people diagnosed with serious mental illness will be prescribed this drug. And only a handful of qualified experts will be allowed to prescribe it. Besides, they pointed out that they recognise the lack of treatment options for mental illness. As for medicinal use, MDMA and psilocybin will be mentioned in Schedule 8 (that is Controlled Drugs). However, in Schedule 9 (Prohibited Drugs), these drugs will be mentioned if used for any other purpose.
Currently, there are no drugs containing psilocybin and MDMA that are approved by TGA. Also, there is no confirmation on how these drugs will be prescribed yet. This amendment will allow authorised psychiatrists to prescribe medicine that contains these substances to patients.
