Reports state that local communities have been having a problem about the camels invading properties in the lookout for water. According to them, there has been a growing concern that camels contribute to global warming as they emit methane equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide a year. Marita Baker, an APY executive board member quoted to a reputed Australian news agency that they have been stuck in stinking hot and uncomfortable conditions, even keeping unwell because camels were coming and knocking down fences, entering houses to try to drink water through air conditioners.

What’s More?

The National Feral Camel Management Plan states that the feral camel population will double every nine years if appropriate ‘pest control’ is not done to balance the population. Tim Moore, the chief executive of carbon farming specialists RegenCo stated that one million feral camels were emitting the effect of a tonne of CO2 per year which was the equivalent of an additional 400,000 cars on the road’.On the other hand, the Department of Energy and Environment have said that emissions from camels or other such feral animals cannot and should not be considered in a country’s emissions estimate. Australia doesn’t report on emissions from feral animals. So activities that alter the emissions from feral animals cannot be subject to an Emissions Reduction Fund method as they are unable to result in suitable carbon abatement and cannot contribute to Australia’s emissions reduction targets. That makes us wonder that the Australian bushfires have already killed an estimate of one billion animals, and many more battling their lives. In this grave situation, is it even humane to think about killing another 10,000? And when it comes to extinction of many species, water scarcity, even excess carbon dioxide production or even overpopulation, which is the one species that is solely responsible for all this? You know the answer, so should we call out for mass murder now?
