Sikh Restaurant Owners Are Offering Free Food To Aussies Affected By Bush Fires

Australia is currently in a state of turmoil as the state of New South Wales is in a state of emergency due to the violent bushfires. Evacuations might start taking place as soon as firefighters battle the flames which are only going to get worse over the weekend. The bushfires have seriously affected daily lives and a lot of wildlife in the area. Most recently, videos of a parched koala went viral on social media. A cyclist was seen offering the animal water while it desperately clung to the cycle. So while the country is suffering because of the bushfires, the Sikh community in Australia has lent out a helping hand. Sikh restaurant owners are offering food for free to Aussies who have been affected by the bush fires.

Following the bushfires that have dislocated a lot of the locals in southeastern Australia, the Sikh community has stepped up to offer help. In Bairnsdale, a restaurant by the name of Desi Grill has been offering free sustenance to the firefighters and the people affected by the bushfires. The duo, Kanwaljit Singh and his wife Kamaljit Kaur run the restaurant and along with their staff have been working tirelessly to cook meals and feed the people. According to reports, they served curry and rice and were assisted by Sikh Volunteers Australia, a charity based out of Melbourne.

Speaking to a local media outlet, SBS Punjabi, Singh said, “It’s terrible out there. People are severely affected and they need food and shelter. It’s our duty to serve them when they need us the most. “Last night had been very busy. We helped the volunteers with cooking rice, curries and pasta and the food was distributed in at least 500 takeaway containers.”

The couple has been living in the country for the past 6 years now and felt like it was their duty to help out in this time of need. The duo said that they can cook for up to 1000 people at a time and have been stocking up on essentials like flour, lentils and rice which will tide them for next week.

This isn’t the first time that the Sikh community has acted as good Samaritans. They helped out a few months ago as well when Australia was fighting bushfires again and a gurdwara had helped in feeding the firefighters.

We can only hope and pray for the Australian community as it goes through another one of the consequences of global warming.
